LINDA HELLER CERAMICS

These pieces are inspired by my study of women, begun during my childhood, when I wondered what kind of a woman I'd become, in light of the restrictions women in the 1950's faced--what they were allowed to do, think and feel, and if they'd be loved.
PARTNERING WITH CLAY
I am a hand builder.  I pound the clay with a concrete idea in my mind of what I plan to make. And then this soft, pliant, willing yet willful primal material takes the upper hand. To date I have never made anything I intended to make. Instead the clay takes the lead and I'm left with the task of intensifying what it shows me. I fire the piece and receive another surprise. You can't be lonely when you work with clay. It forces you to participate in a magical process of give and take.

I was a suburban wife. I did everything a wife was expected to do. I paid a great deal of attention to my looks. They said I was stunning and still my husband cheated and left me for a younger woman.
